Hi, Evan Nappen here, Independent Program Attorney for U.S. LawShield of New Jersey. I’m here today to talk to you about a question of transporting or carrying a long arm in New Jersey, meaning a rifle or shotgun.
Carrying a Long Arm in New Jersey
What do you need to do that? You must possess a New Jersey Firearm Purchaser Identification Card to transport a long arm (rifle or shotgun) in the State of New Jersey. It’s very important that you have a New Jersey Firearm Purchaser Identification Card. That lets you transport unloaded rifles and shotguns.
Exemptions
Now, there also are exemptions in the law, such as going to the target range, but those exemptions require that you be narrowly within them. But, if you have a New Jersey Firearms Purchaser Identification Card, you’re covered for your transport of unloaded rifles and shotguns.

I completely understand the law for transportation of firearms, rifle or handguns, in NJ and other states. You do not mention carrying a rifle or shotgun out of the case, while hunting, walking the roads with an unloaded firearm and valid hunting license. Is it legal to walk the roads during hunting season with unloaded firearms ?

Thanks for the clip, no pun intended. I enjoy hiking on county owned property during the off deer season, in a coyote infested area. Would it be acceptable to carry an unloaded side by side 12 guage shotgun; with shells stored on the stock, ready to be loaded? Of course I would have my Firearms ID card on my person as well.
